CAN ORITSEJAFOR IMPORT ARMS FOR CHRISTIANS?

By Uzor Ngoladi

“And that night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death in the army of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand men; and when the people got up early in the morning, there was nothing to be seen but dead bodies.” 2Kings 19:35

“God is the highest killer. Look at the number of people he killed in a single night because of his people. Don't mess with God's people. I don't know why we have cowardly Christians in Nigeria. Instead of us to support one another, we prefer to fight a man of God who understands the mind of God.”My friend, Collins asserted.

He had quoted the above scripture to reinforce his support for Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the president of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) whose private jet was involved in a $9.3million arms deal in faraway South Africa.

I had called for the CAN president resignation for dragging Christendom to the mud by engaging the services of his aircraft for gunrunning. Collins would hear none of it and articulated his opinion passionately. He was a first class engineering graduate and I consider his views brilliant albeit with reservations. A man of God of such stature must shine the light for others to follow. What business has God with guns and illegal currency notes?

“If Oritsejafor is actually procuring arms for Christians to defend themselves in Northern Nigeria, let him make it public. We will support him and raise funds to that effect. We need a fearless and rugged CAN president like him to deliver Christians from the humiliation of being butchered and bombed by Muslims without retaliation.

I grew up in the north and know the injustices Christians suffer there.”

“So you support us to carry arms about and fight an eye for an eye? That will create a holocaust situation and a state of disarray. Christianity is not a violent religion.” I stated emphatically.

“This is the misconception that has kept us lazy and hopeless. God is a God of war and justice. He will not spare anybody that fights his children. The Israelites fought battles supported by God. Moses was a man of war who slaughtered many. David never lost any battle. He never waited for God to come down to fight his wars. David fought gallantly and conquered his adversaries. Elijah and others… I love that generation of God's people, they were more courageous than the Christians of today. The mandate of boko haram is to Islamize Nigeria and force Christianity into extinction. Go and read about Christianity in Turkey and understand what happened there. The same thing is happening right now in the north. If they bomb any church close to you in Lagos, will you attend church service next Sunday?” Collins queried.

“No, but…we can't accept a state of anarchy because of few miscreants…”

“Your answer is no. Please let's allow Oritsejafor to import arms for Christians in his capacity as CAN president if that is his mission to South Africa. He has my steadfast support. Christians must protect themselves and fight back without surrender. That is the only remedy for this endless insurgency. God's people must be victorious in battle. God is waiting for us to wage war against our common enemy. I have witnessed several church bombings in Jos. My sister nearly lost her life inside a church. Do you want us to continue living in fear? God has not given us the spirit of fear but of boldness.”

With my friend's radical position on this burning issue, I dropped the resignation line of thought. I just hope his insinuation about the $9.3million arms deal turns out to be the opposite. God's people of today will rather pray and fast than engage the enemy in a physical battle. No Christian is ready to carry AK.47 or detonate a bomb to defend his religion. War is more expensive than peace. But will a man fold his hands and watch life slip through his fingers because of peace? To sound off on a political note, our Christian leaders must look beyond praying and fasting and do the needful (apologies to Stella Odua) to spare us this agony of defeat and cowardice. Ayo Oritsejafor might just be right and wrong according to varied schools of thought having denied ownership of the 9.3million USD and knowledge of the arms it was meant to procure with his private jet that was leased out to a company on a long term basis.
