"We Need To Sit Down And Work Towards A Real Market Export Strategy For Nollywood" - Niyi Akinmolayan
Popuiar Nigerian filmmaker, Niyi Akinmolayan, has called on relevant individuals in the movie-making industry to be strategic in order to be able to work on a real market export strategy for Nollywood movies.
The filmmaker, who is renowned for addressing various issues in the movie industry, had last week, emphasized that "The next phase of Nollywood's growth is going to require a lot of sacrifice from the current players. We might not even be the ones to reap the benefits but that's the only way forward.
"It is what it is. We can decide now to set our destiny by creating tailored solutions or we can continue to wait till we fade."
Taking to his Instagram page, Niyi stressed that no one ranging from filmmakers, distributors, government, and the press, have taken out time to deeply research about international taste in Nollywood films.
According to him, many just assume that "people abroad watch Nollywood," stressing that there is no actual research to back the claim, while emphasizing that people in diaspora are different from international audience.
Sharing an advice, he stated that he hopes that one day, everyone involved will actually sit down to assess the situation, adding that "we can now work towards a real market export strategy for Nollywood."
He wrote:
"No one... not filmmakers, distributors, govt. press have done actual research to study international taste in Nollywood films. We just assume "people abroad watch nollywood o.. cos my Aunty does". None of it is based on real research. Also "diaspora” is not international audience.
"Hopefully one day, we will sit together and accept the reality. And then we can actually work towards a real market export strategy for nollywood."
