If Your Partner's Parents Don't Respect You, Don't Marry – Toolz
Popular media personality Tolulope Oniru, popularly known as Toolz, has doubled down on her controversial advice about marriage and in-laws.
Speaking on The Morayo Show, where she reflected on her 10-year marriage, she advised couples to think twice if their partner's parents do not like or respect them.
Following the controversy that erupted on social media over her comments, Toolz addressed the issue on Instagram, insisting that her position remains unchanged. She explained that when in-laws disapprove of a partner, the incoming spouse often ends up in a losing battle.
She maintained that while having a partner choose them over family may sound romantic, it usually brings emotional strain and potential estrangement, which places heavy pressure on the relationship.
Toolz clarified that she is not asking in-laws to adore their child's partner, but they should at least show respect. She added that peace between a partner and their parents is a blessing, and when that peace includes the spouse, it makes life much easier for everyone.
She said:
"I've seen the different takes on what I said on @themorayoshow and I still fully stand by it.
"I genuinely believe it's important that your partner's parents like you. Or at the very least, respect you.
"Because if they don't, it's a battle the incoming partner rarely wins. Best-case scenario: your partner chooses you and ends up estranged from their parents. And while 'it's us against the world might sound romantic, that's a heavy burden for any relationship to carry.
"I'm not saying your in-laws have to adore you or agree with every decision you make absolutely. That's unrealistic. But they should respect you, respect your relationship, and respect the decisions you and your partner make together.
"Peace between your partner and their parents is a blessing. And when that peace extends to you as well, it makes life so much easier for everyone involved.
