Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has suggested that marriages should have a review period every five years.

Speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, he argued that a fixed review system would compel couples to evaluate their unions and address unresolved issues before they escalate.

Bovi explained that the prospect of a scheduled reassessment would encourage partners to be more deliberate in their conduct within the marriage. He proposed that within the two families, a conversation should take place asking if both parties still want to stay married, giving them the opportunity to table what has been happening. He noted that when a spouse knows there is a review coming in one year, they would adjust their behaviour.

He acknowledged that the word "expiry" is powerful, but maintained that the idea of renewal could be beneficial, especially in Africa where the communal system is strong.

He said:
"Expiry is a very powerful word but I think every marriage should be renewed, for example, every five years. Within the two families, (there should be a conversation like), 'Do you still want to marry? Come and table what has been happening', especially in Africa where we are very communal. When your spouse knows there is a review coming one year from now, he'll adjust."
