Seun Kuti Blasts Afrobeats Artistes' Who Compare Themselves To Fela
Nigerian singer Seun Kuti has lambasted Afrobeats artistes who compare themselves to his late father and Afrobeats pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The youngest son of late Fela made his anger known during a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, stating that he has no problem with individuals who have sampled several of his father's songs, however, he is strongly against the notion that sampling is father is equivalent to being like his father.
Blowing hot, he urged artistes' to desist from the act, stressing that such claims are only made in Nigeria, asserting that "people are wild."
He said:
“A few people have done good samples of Fela’s music. But the only critique that I have is that sampling Fela doesn’t make you Fela.
“So, people should stop saying that they are my dad. That is crazy. It crazy when people say that they are the ‘New Fela.’ Where is the ‘Bob Marley’? It is only in Nigeria you hear such. We so wild stuff here. People are wild."
Seun Kuti's anger stems from how several Afrobeats stars, including Burna Boy and Wizkid, have compared themselves to his father, Fela.
