Cultism In Universities Is a Spillover From the Society

Prof Daramola who started as a primary school headmaster and have supervised over 30 masters and six doctoral students said “Change can only take place through a holistic approach.”
He added that Nigeria universities are poorly funded which has made white collar job readily scarce.

He noted that “Cultism in universities is a spillover from the society. Children of highly-placed people are in secret cult groups. School environment should be made friendly to students. We should introduce entrepreneurship skills in our universities.”

Responding however, to question posed to him by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on what he thinks is the cause of the perennial strikes among other debilitating issues bedeviling the nation's tertiary institutions, Daramola, among other things, blamed it on lack of communication between government and staff unions, poor funding, poor monitoring of government funds sent to academic institutions, poor monitoring of institutions by inspectorate teams, little or no training and retraining of teachers and dearth of history teachers, particularly at basic educational levels.

Also responding to question posed to him by Sen Isiaka Adeleke (Osun West Senatorial Zone), on how he hopes to nip the poor enrollment of girl-child in schools, if appointed 'minister of education,' Daramola suggested that the use of community radio should be re-introduced to play a major role in advocacy campaigns, particularly in rural communities across the country.
According to him, the community radio will play effective role to targeting parents residing in rural communities, especially using vernacular (their mother dialect).

Earlier, after stream of questions which lasted barely an hour, former Governor of Rivers State and ministerial nominee from the state, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, was finally screened by the Senate and asked to take a bow.

His screening was swift as there was no much questions posed to Lokpobiri.

I dont Like Corruption - Amaechi

Drama, however, ensued when Senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Sen. Godswill Akpabio raised a point of order, stating that content of the report of the Senator Anyanwu-led committee should have been made known to the Senate, before Amaechi's screening.

Akpabio noted that the PDP-caucus in the Senate had reached a resolution not to ask Amaechi questions.

By this statement, the Senate was thrown into a rowdy session with many lawmakers ranting bow and go.

Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, however noted that being a former lawmaker, Amaechi should be allowed to take bow.

Presently, there is rowdiness in the senate floor following Amaechi screening as lawmakers are ranting bow and go.

The state and the lawmakers want Amaechi to be dropped, accusing him of having made the state to lose huge revenue when he was governor for eight years. The opposition against him informed the postponement of his screening twice last week when 18 other nominees were cleared by the upper legislative chamber.

According to Rotimi Amaechi during screening, “Whether I become minister or not, it will be on record that I once attend the Senate screening. My administration worked to restore the old glory of Port Harcourt. Rivers State was the first state to introduce Fiscal Responsibility Law. My administration redefined governance and reposition Rivers State. I was born to fight for my rights.

Amaechi who was asked to defined corruption said, “Well I don't like corruption. I was never indicted by any panel. Corruption is a very wide concept and very difficult to define.”

He urged the diversification of economy and investment in education, adding that, “We must remove corruption and invest in power. Without improved power supply, there can't be industrialization.”

He furthered that resources are in Niger Delta and they should be treated fairly.

Finally, the senate has considered former governor of River State, Rotimi Amaechi for ministerial screening.

It would be recalled that his screening had been delayed following series of petition of alleged corruption against his person.

Others are who are also listed for screening are Heineken Lokpobiri, Cladius Omoyele Daramola, Adewole Isaac Folorunso, Baba Shehuri Mustapha and Ocholi Enojo James.
