I Didn’t Do Gospel Music Because Of D’Banj—Orezi

One of the 'Shoki' singers, Esegine Allen, aka Orezi, may have made a name for himself in the secular music world, but tracing back his root as a church boy, the singer said he would have become a gospel artiste, but for one thing the genre of music lacks.

Orezi said though he is still staunch Christian, but he will always do secular songs because he had always wanted to be like D'Banj and others.

He stated that his mother had always wanted him to be a gospel singer, but he chose others in other to have freedom to do some things.

Orezi explained that gospel artistes do not have swag, which is the selling point in hip hop genre.

“My mum wanted me to do gospel music, but I told her that I write all songs but we sing for the market. It wasn't that the Christian music was not selling, but I just wanted to be like D'Banj and the likes, which was just the target, I wasn't trying to be like the Christian artistes because I am a fashionable person.

“Christian music, you cannot wear all the chain and no swags, so I told my mum that I just want to sing and make money and be popular, that is just the target. She had issues with me singing secular music but she got to accept who I am and she got to accept my music and till today, she is one of my biggest fans,” he told Hiptv.
