I Got My Igbo Names From My Mother-In-Law—Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington is the star in the series, 'Scandal' that is currently hitting up the charts and television tubes around the globe. She now has an African name; an Igbo name at that.
She recently revealed that her marriage to former National Football League (NFL) player, Nnamdi Asomugha resulted in her and her daughter having the Igbo names.
Speaking with InStyle, an international magazine, Kerry explained that her mother-in-law gave her and her daughter the African names.
She said, "Nnamdi's parents are Nigerian immigrants. His father passed on when he was young. When you marry into the Igbo culture, you get a new name. My name is Ogechi. I wear it on a necklace my mother-in-law gave me."
She revealed that her daughter was named after her own grandmother, who was a strong woman that catered for every child on her own terms.
"My daughter's name is Isabelle Amarachi. Isabelle is my grandmother's name. She was a bad-a**. She'd be scowling if she knew I called her that, but she was an immigrant from Jamaica who raised seven children alone in the Bronx. Isabelle's middle name, Amarachi is Igbo for 'God's grace'," she said.
