Nigeria Declared Ebola Free By WHO

Following a 42-day period without any new cases of Ebola in Nigeria, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the country Ebola free.

Nigeria first recorded the case after a Liberian American Ebola infected man named Patrick Sawyer travelled to Nigeria enroute Lagos on his way to a seminar in Calabar, Nigeria, was admitted in a Lagos hospital. Mr. Sawyer and few others that had contact with him later died of the disease.

A representative of WHO, Rui Gama Vaz, at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, October 20, 2014, declared Nigeria an Ebola free country after containing the deadly disease successfully.

Vaz said, "Nigeria is now free of Ebola. The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated. This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world that Ebola can be contained."

The virus was first recorded in Lagos and later spread to Port Harcourt, Rivers State. During the periods, there were fears among Nigerians who were very scared of the disease. It was even speculated that bathing with salt in hot water would cure the disease, which some tried and few deaths recorded.
