Lupita Nyong’o, Becomes Africa’s Icon At Oscars

Lupita Amondi Nyong'o couldn't have been cuter holding her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and she was so incredibly gracious and self-aware about the harrowing role in '12 Years A Slave' that got her to this point.

Nyong'o, 31, is a Kenyan actress and music video director. Nyong'o was born in Mexico City, Mexico, to Dorothy and Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, a politician in Kenya.

She appeared in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave (2013) as Patsey, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the Screen ActorsGuild and Critics' Choice Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in addition to receiving nominations for the Golden Globeand the BAFTAAward for Best Supporting Actress.

Nyongo'o while receiving the award thanked her '12 Years A Slave' director Steve McQueen and co-stars and the Yale School of Drama, her friends, and her family, especially her brother Peter “Junior” Nyong'o, who was her date for the evening.

While leaving the stage, she left everyone with some words of wisdom “when I look down at this Golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you are from, your dreams are valid”.
