Pregnant Women in Enugu to Show Evidence of Tax Payment to Access Free Medical Care

By Julia Blaise

Enugu state government now wants pregnant women in the state to provide evidence of tax payment by them or their husbands before accessing the Free Maternal and Child Healthcare (FMCH) policy of the state. The citizens of the state are seriously lamenting over the situation, insisting that the free maternal healthcare was out in place to reduce infant and maternal mortality rate in the state.

The citizens of Enugu state want the government to completely do away with the evidence of tax payment policy before pregnant women could access the FMCH health facility.

It would be recalled that governor Chime had two years ago introduced the free maternal and child health care programme for pregnant women and children below the age of five years. The scheme, which was expected to be available in some designated public hospitals throughout the state, was aimed at giving free access to medicare for the vulnerable in the state.

However, the stakeholders monitoring the implementation of the programme in Enugu said that certain government policies including lack of drugs have greatly hampered the project, stressing that it was not available in several health institutions in the state.

Nevertheless, citizens of the state lamented that they want free medical care, as most of the women affected are jobless and widows.
