At home with Oby Edozie: ‘I have moved up in life’

By Nonye Ben-Nwankwo

Obiageli Edozie, better known as Oby, is an actress that has tried to remain relevant in the movie industry. In this interview, the actress, whose new film, Save Our Soul, seems to have given her a new lease of life, talks about her job and life The movie, Save Our Soul. Until her film, Save Our Soul, came out, Oby Edozie was out of the limelight though she was “doing movies here and there.”

Save Our Soul, which is being shown on the big screen in Nigeria and in some countries abroad, made a big buzz in the entertainment circuit last year. When it was eventually premiered, many buffs were stunned by the quality and story line.

“The movie is different from the everyday Nollywood movie. This is an advocacy movie on cancer. It is educative,” she told Life and Beat.

“I'm screening my films in different countries. Because of the new movie, I'm being invited to different countries to show the movie. I have done UK; I have done Nigeria. I'm doing the Netherland on Saturday (today). I still have to do France, Switzerland and the US. I have been to so many countries.

“Of all the cities I have visited, I love New York City the most.”

My cropped hair

I had to crop my hair because of the movie. I was a cancer patient in the movie, and to depict the role very well, I had to shave my hair. But I didn't really wear the cropped look outside the movie. I wore wigs and hair extensions until my hair grew back.

I will act for life

I love my profession so much. Thank God it is a profession that you don't retire from. Even when I'm old, there will always be a role for me. I intend to act for the rest of my life.

I love good dresses

I try to dress well at all times. Without sounding immodest, I buy expensive clothes. Mon Ami is my designer and you know he doesn't come cheap.

Why I moved to Lekki

Ha! What a question! I had to move up in life. Did you expect I was going to remain in a particular place for the rest of my life? No way! Lekki is not even where it ends. By His grace, if he blesses me more, I will still move up again.

My mum… my life

I love my mother so much. She has been my backbone. Her prayers, love and care have kept me and my siblings going all this while. She is a staunch member of the Lord's Chosen Church. She is always praying for me. She has done so much for me that I had to buy a car for her to show my appreciation for all she has done. She doesn't mind that I am an actress. My father didn't even mind before he died.

Awards

God has been good. I have received so many awards since I joined the industry, but the one dearest to my heart was the one given to me by the king of my village in Aguleri, Anambra State. I cherish it so much.

I'm not a car freak

I have a (Nissan) Murano but that is 'old school.' It is not as if I can't afford another car if I so desire, but I have responsibilities. I'm not always in the country, so there is really no need for a new car when the one I have is not giving me any problem.

Marriage? Hmmmm...

You are asking me when I will get married? Well, come tomorrow. Oh, you think I'm not serious? Well, come next week. I will get married next week.

I have no regrets in life

I learn from my past experiences and I move on. I don't allow anything to get me down otherwise I will not succeed. I try to persevere and be successful. When you become successful, it will wipe away any regret whatsoever. Once you have made a mistake, you should learn from it and move on with your life. You don't have to wallow in regret. I always try to be better in everything I do.

My most valuable possession

Do I really need to announce it to the whole world? Well, I have a house in Banana Island. I also have a house in America and in England. I'm dreaming big. If you dream big and quote big, those things will be yours. I'm quoting these big mansions and claiming them by faith.
