Therapy And Religion Can Coexist – Funny Bone Tells Young Christians
Nigerian stand-up comedian and Nollywood actor Stanley Chibunna, popularly known as Funny Bone, has shared a thought-provoking message about the intersection of faith, trauma, and mental health.
In a recent Instagram post, he noted that being "born again" does not erase childhood trauma or behavioral dysfunction.
Funny Bone observed that many young Christians assume that spirituality alone is enough to heal deep wounds, but unresolved trauma often thrives in the subconscious, shaping reactions in ways that contradict their faith. He pointed out that some of the meanest people he has met are those who identify as born-again Christians.
He emphasized that therapy, prayer, spirituality, and religion can coexist, urging the church to recognize that some personality traits have nothing to do with spirituality and that healing requires more than religious practices.
He wrote:
"I hope that one day the church understands that some personality traits have nothing to do with spirituality, and that being 'born again' doesn't erase childhood trauma or behavioral dysfunction.
Keen therapy sessions should be prioritized first. Most young Christians are living with deep childhood trauma and bitterness as a result of their life experiences, yet they assume that being born again is enough. But the truth is, you can be a traumatized, born-again Christian.
This is one reason why some of the meanest people I've met call themselves 'born again Christians' because trauma often thrives in the subconscious.
Therapy, religion, and spirituality can co-exist."
"To many young Christians, not smoking, not doing drugs, and not sleeping around etc are seen as the essence of being a new creation in Christ.
Yet, the heart can still be deeply wounded, bitter, or unkind because unresolved trauma often shapes subconscious reactions.
Therapy, prayer, spirituality, and religion can coexist."
