“Artists Spark Controversy In Order To Gain Streams” - Baba Fryo Asserts
Veteran Nigerian singer Friday Igwe, professionally known as Baba Fryo, has made an observation about the Nigerian music industry, particularly how artistes prioritize controversies in order to promote their songs.
Baba Fryo, during a recent episode of the I Say What I Say podcast, made reference to the recent ruckus that emanated between Afrobeats star Wizkid and singer, Seun Kuti, following the former’s comparison to Seun’s father and Afrobeats pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Fryo claimed that the act was intentional from Wizkid in order to promote his joint EP with Asake, ‘Real.’
According to him, getting a hit song is tough in the current state of the industry, particularly with the advent of trends, leading singers to resort to controversies to promote their project.
He further slammed DJs and music executives for contributing to the hunger for trends over quality music, urging them to return the industry back to its former glory.
“It take a lot to get a mega hit now. Some go even do some kind stunt. Shey you dey see the one with ‘Wizkid pass Fela’; all these ones na stunt.
“A lot of artists spark controversy on purpose so that people will stream their songs. I takes a lot to get a hit now because they have raised the bar so high.”
