"Respect Should Not Be Based On Age Alone" – ID Cabasa
Nigerian music producer and singer, Olumide Ogunade, professionally known as ID Cabasa, has shared his thoughts on the issue of age, experience, and competence.
The veteran music star addressed the misconception among individuals, during a recent episode of The Clarity Zone podcast, where he disputed the claim that one gets wiser with age.
Clarifying that he is in no way downplaying the intelligence of older individuals, he pointed out that he has noticed that many individuals equate their experience and competence to wisdom, while in truth, many of their experiences are obsolete.
"The assumption that the older you get, the wiser you are is an assumption that has never been true. I am not saying older people are not smart or wise.
“But most times, people see themselves as wiser because they are more experienced not competent. But most of the experiences that you are bringing, a lot of them are obsolete."
Explaining further, ID Cabassa maintained that the demand for respect should not be about age alone, but whoever is getting older should show qualities of growth.
"If you are growing as a person, there is a tendency that as you get older, you are going to be wiser. But that isn’t the case if you are not growing but just aging.
“We are dealing with a generation that came with computer OS but you learned how to use computer. So, we need to be careful not to demand for respect only on the basis of age."
