Betty Irabor Stands With Toke Makinwa Amidst Backlash

By Oluwarantimi Oludase

Following the commencement of the nationwide protest on Thursday, 1 August, 2024, popular Nigerian television personality, radio host and vlogger, Toke Makinwa, has been subjected to immense backlash.

The reason for the backlash on Toke Makinwa was triggered by a tweet on X, where she admonished Nigerians against looting during the protests with an emoji which many interpreted as being unconcerned about the reason for the protest. Many believe that she is politically affiliated and hence, the reason for her speaking against the protest.

Toke Makinwa wrote on X:
"Destroying properties and stealing from your fellow Nigerians who are passing through the same hardship is not right at all. This is very sad, 🥲"

Not long after her tweet, series of backlash trailed her comment section, as many began to insult her for being unconcerned about the economic problems owing to the fact that she is politically affiliated with the present government.

However, one of the backlash tweets which has gained numerous attention was a tweet made by a troll who insulted her for not having a child of her own, despite undergoing IVF.

The troll with the handle, Odumeje's Catacrism wrote on X:

"Baby girl, this is why you have tried IVF 2 times and non has worked.

This is why you have snatched so many of your “girlfriends” men and non has stuck by you; this consistent need to be a classist and a bully while you come from a low class yourself and understand the struggle."

Reacting to the troll's comment is Popular Nigerian columnist, Betty Irabor. She believes that the person who trolled Toke Makinwa over her failed IVF was very wrong, as she has suffered the same fate and knows what it feels like.

Betty Irabor wrote on X:
"I don’t care what @TokeMakinwa posted that pushed your buttons yesterday but referencing her IVF attempts is repulsive. If u haven’t witnessed d struggles of women undergoing IVF treatments (I have) then u won’t get why that statement was in such bad taste.Let’s do better. Ire o."
