R&B Artist R. Kelly Transferred to North Carolina Prison to Commence 30-Year Prison Sentence.
Renowned American R&B artist, Robert Sylvester Kelly, famously known as R. Kelly, has been transferred from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago to the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina, to serve his prison sentence. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed the move on Wednesday of last week.
Kelly, a Chicago native, was sentenced in February to an additional year in prison for federal child pornography and child enticement charges, on top of the 30 years he is already serving for a separate conviction in New York.
A federal jury in Chicago convicted him in September 2022 of sexually abusing three women, who testified under the pseudonyms Jane, Pauline, and Nia. The same jury acquitted him of enticement charges involving two other accusers.
However, Kelly still faces a solicitation of prostitution charge in Minnesota, although that case has stalled as his federal cases took precedence.
Meanwhile, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx decided last month to drop sexual abuse and sexual assault indictments against Kelly, stating that her office’s limited resources would be better spent pursuing other sexual assault cases. Kelly, currently 56 years old, may be eligible for release from prison when he is a little over 79 years old.
