I Wasn’t Given Chance To Succeed As A Fashion Designer—Opral Benson

Whenever one is determined to do anything, no matter what people say or the challenges, he never looks back on his dream.

This could best describe Chief (Mrs) Opral Benson, when she established her fashion school some years ago.

Many years ago, Mrs Benson on the lips of many fashion inclined Nigerians. She is a fashion designed that can be said to have revolutionized the business in the country. Even being the wife of late Minister of Information, TOS Benson, did not stop her from her passion.

The 'Yeye Oge' of Lagos recently revealed how she started her Opral Benson Beauty Institute in 1987.

Speaking with National Weekender, she said, "When I went into it, I actually left a secured job at the University of Lagos. People then really thought I was making a huge mistake, but I felt that was what I wanted to do.

"Parents felt it was much more prestigious for their children to be doctors, lawyers. But I knew what I wanted and so I followed my dreams and here we are today.

"Then a lot of my friends and family just felt it was not really an industry that was appreciated back then. People looked down on the industry; it was not a special thing then. Those days, people didn't think it was something they could build a career out of, they didn't take it as something serious.
