Kano Mass Weddings Produce 260 New Born Babies
Kano State mass wedding programme embarked upon by Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has so far produced 260 new born babies in the last two years.
It would be recalled that Governor Kwankwaso led-administration introduced mass wedding, where men and women divorcees, bachelors and those who want to take second, third or fourth wives apply and are screened under the Kano State Hisbah Board.
The mass weddings had been in batches and the state government has sponsored about 5000 marriages since 2012 with 1000 couples married in each batch.
Hisbah Commandant General, Sheik Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa made the disclosure when he received the emir of Deba, Gombe State, Alhaji Abubakar Waziri Muhammad, who paid him a courtesy visit, on his way to Saudi Arabia for the lesser Hajj.
The commandant said his board married out a total of 4922 widows, and Allah has blessed the marriage with many children. He said that so far a total of 260 babies were born from these marriages.
Kano State government said the programme was aimed at reducing the rising divorce rate in the state and to provide the vulnerable divorcee women with a stable home and social security guaranteed by their new husbands.
It was also to reduce cases of rape, which they believed unmarried men are involved in.
The mass wedding took place usually at Kano emirs mosque under his care. Interetingly, Kano emir always served as father of the brides and governor Kwankwaso as father of the grooms.
