Nollywood Should not Tear Apart Over Gov. Akpabio's N50m Donation - Dickson Iroegbu

By Julia Blaise

Award winning director, producer and Executive Assistant Creative Entertainment and Tourism, under the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Youth and Students Affairs, Dickson Iroegbu recently spoke his view over the embattled N50million donated to Nollywood by Akwa-Ibom state governor, Godswill Akpabio.

The film maker said, he is disappointed that such amount of money which is not even enough to produce a good film is creating misunderstanding among Nollywood practitioners.

"First of all, it is absolutely wrong that few individuals will go to Akwa-Ibom to collect the money without the consent of others. As if that is not enough, they started disbursing the funds and at the same try to justify it.

"That fund was given to Nollywood film makers by governor Godswill Akpabio when President Goodluck Jonathan celebrated Nollywood at 20 for the industry. The governor donated the fund to create a Goodluck Jonathan's Transformation Agenda in Nollywood. Now, I have heard about the things they have mentioned the money is used for, sharing it among the guilds. This is not what transformation is all about.

"Nollywood needs good stories to bring about this transformation. For instance, there are filmmakers who will do great films and tell good stories when they have money. The likes of Kunle Afolayan, Emem Isong, Desmond Elliot will do great film if they see good money.

"There should be re-setting projects such as, telling the story of history of Nigeria. The story of Nigeria has not been told. So, there are more important things that will bring transformation that need the attention of money more than what they are doing now.

"Again, this fund should not tear Nollywood apart, the fund is not even enough to make good film, so why will people tear each other apart because of it. They are dragging the names of both the governor and President Jonathan to the mud over the money. We should behave in a manner that will attract such privieges in the future," he stated.
