Nigerian Cargo Plane Destroys Passenger Bus in Ghana, Kills 10

By Nana Kofi

About 10 people died when Nigeria's Allied Air cargo plane skidded off the runway at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra Saturday evening and ran into a 207 Benz bus on a nearby road.

The plane crushed the bus, killing passengers aboard.

The four crew members of the plane survived and were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital.

The plane crashed through metal railings and a concrete wall at the airport before sweeping the commercial bus off the 37 Military Hospital – Burma Camp road at the El Wak Stadium and ended up at the Hajj Village.

The busy road has been closed as several security agencies including the Police, Military, Fire Service, FBI and the National Disaster Management Organisation scramble to rid the scene of dismembered human parts and to secure the immediate environs of the crash.

President JEA Mills, who is said to be saddened by the situation, has constituted an investigative body to look into the crash.

Vice President John Mahama who spoke from the airport said should the need arise, the government would seek international assistance to help with investigations into the cause of the crash.

Mr Mahama said efforts would be made by government to alleviate the pain of those who lost relatives in the crash.

He urged the public to avoid early conclusions until “thorough” investigations had been completed.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly said efforts would be made on Sunday to remove the plane from the road.
