50 Cent’s $1m deal: Should Achebe have rejected the offer?

By TADE MAKINDE and SEGUN ADEBAYO

Following Chinua Achebe's rejection of 50 Cent's $1m for the use of the title “Things fall Apart” as the American rapper's latest movie, Nigerian celebs react to the rejection. TADE MAKINDE and SEGUN ADEBAYO report.

One of them must have leaked the deal to the press, which I fault. When Sade Adu gave Patra the permission, without asking a cent, for the use of “Sweetest Taboo”, nobody knew how it happened till the Patra version was released. I think it should have been same here. In any case, Achebe has the right to reject the offer. It would have been interesting if it was $5m

Ayo George, writer/event planner

50 made the right move by asking baba's permission. He even offered $1m. It's not really about the greens, though important because that's the amount given to Nobel Peace price winners annually, it would have brought something youthful and different to bear on that title. I learnt the book has been translated in over 40 languages, 50's interest would have further made that title trans-generational. It would have been more appreciated by African-Americans and been a collaboration of some sort.

Famed Nigerian Author Wins Legal Battle Against 50 Cent.

Olu Jacobs and Joke Sylva,producer:

The Americans are very good at valuing what they have. It is when they want to pay an outsider they behave as if they don't know. The book is one of the greatest of all time.

It has been translated into different languages all over the world and it is still on the reading. For me, the negotiation has not started, when they reach 50million dollars, discussion can start. Anything short of that, they should forget it.

Kate Henshaw, actress:

It's Achebe's intellectual work. Everything in life is not all about money. Sometimes you just look at what you have and say you are not letting it go for whatever price. I support the man's decision and I respect it.#

Saheed Balogun:

It is intellectual property. I don't believe 50 cent could offer his money. Professor Achebe's book is globally recognised and has been printed in different languages over the years; it will be wrong for 50 cent to say he wants to offer Achebe money. That's ridiculous.

Femi Branch,actor:

Why did he reject the money in the first place? He's entitled to his own opinion. I know that professor Achebe is a very principled man. It also depends on what 50 cent is using the song for; does it represent the ideology of the book, how much is the money for somebody like professor Achebe? For me, I support the man's decision on the basis of the content of the song.

Fred Amata,actor:

I have read about the story in the national dailies but I can't speak for him because I don't know the details of their discussion. I can't say anything further.

To me, it leaves more questions than suggesting reasons. Achebe is about 80 years, many may not be a motivation again. But then, I don't want to believe he has made a million dollars in his 5 years as a lecturer over there. One thing for sure, if he had allowed 50 cents to use the title, even for free or for a fee, the sale of the book itself would have risen in United States. Maybe reprints would have increased his chances of winning the Nobel prize
