Lagos government closes down DSTV office over tax default

The head office of Multi Choice Nigeria, was shut down earlier today, Wednesday September 7, 2011, over non remittance of tax. According to a New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report, officials of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), had to shut down the owners of the cable television outlet, DSTV, after it was establish they are short in tax payment in excess of a N100 million.

Bola Shodipo, Special Adviser to the Lagos state governor on Taxation and Revenue, told NAN the government will not tolerate companies that fail to pay their taxes voluntarily.

“The closure was carried out to make the outfit fulfill its obligation to the government. Government would pursue companies who fail to voluntarily honour the payment of their tax bills, to make them comply,” the NAN report reads.

The report also stated that “discussions [are] going on between the government and officials of Multi Choice over the issue and the government might consider early re-opening of the office if the tax was remitted
