I’VE NEGLECTED THE CHURCH, BUT I’M MAKING AMENDS - DESMOND ELLIOT

You started your acting career in church, how much of your time is the church still enjoying?

Well, because of my schedule which shouldn't be a good reason, I am not giving as much as I should. However, I am making amends right now, I'm trying to see how things can work out. I've been under pressure, but now, things are getting into shape. So, I thank God. Nothwithstanding, the church is still enjoying me in terms of my relationship with God. I'm just hoping that it goes higher and at a faster rate than it is right now.

We also heard that your church is not happy with you over the romance and kissing roles you perform in the movies.

The church never said anything like that, although I have some friends, or brethrens as it may be who had objections to some scenes that happen on set but in as much as the Bible says, work out your salvation… you know salvation is very personal, it is about how the Lord wants to work with you, so, anything I don't feel convinced about doing, I don't do. But if I feel convinced in my spirit that I am not going outside my limit as a Christian, I do it. Besides, in everything I'm just acting.

We also learnt that for your insistence on those romance roles, your wife had to quit the house. She packed out and went to where? Vacation?May be to her father house.

Which father's house? The house no be two of us get am? She didn't pack out to anywhere and she didn't have objections to any thing. She's just human, every body is human, there is limit to which she can take things, but then, she comes to location with me, she sees what happens and knows that there is nothing to be afraid of or nothing to feel funny about.

I recall that in an interview you granted some years back, you stated that some big stars didn't quite encourage you when you started. Tell us, what other measures did you take to come this far?

Well, now being a little bit at their level, I now discovered that to some extent, it is not in their position to tell. Now putting myself in their shoes, I find out that because of their busy schedule, they tend not to pay attention to people as much because at the end of the day, they are not the ones to determine who should play a role or not. However, God helped me, through, and basically you only need to work this thing out with God and that is what I tell people who look up to me. I say work it out with God and God is going to see you through. Meanwhile, my wife never packed out of the house.

I recall also that you skipped your Youth Service at the time you were supposed to observe it. Have you been able to fulfil that obligation after then?

O yes. I have served already, I served about two years ago in Ogun State. As a graduate of Economics from Lagos State University (LASU).

Didn't you believe that opportunities abound in Economics to make money before venturing into the movies?

Well, it is not about making good money, it is about being comfortable and I am going back to my practice, that doesn't mean I am leaving acting. I'm starting off next month by the grace of God. I am starting off my fish farm. I'm also starting an NGO. Because at the end of the day, you discover that as an actor, God does not just put you there for the sake of being popular. You have to use that fame to better the lives of people. This does not mean that I am right now at my satisfied state, but I am at a stage where I think God can use me to bless others, trying to gather friends. My first project is going to be on water. I am going to be providing water for under developed communities because water is a big issue to be discussed in this country, without water, there is no life, good drinking water, and by the grace of God, we will achieve it.

What is this talk about your being Yoruba, Ibo and Hausa at the same time?

Well, I have a Yoruba father, an Ibo mother and I grew up in the North so, what can I say?

Is it also true that you had to drop your Yoruba name (Sola) to be able to be accepted in the Igbo-English language wing of the movie industry?

Well, my name is not just Sola, my names are: Sola, Emeka Desmond Elliot. So, it depends on where I am at a particular point in time. If you call me Emeka, I know you are probably from my mother's side. If you call me Sola, I know you are from father's side or my mate in primary or secondary school. But at my university stage I started using Desmond, then, I just decided to adopt Desmond, it's my name anyway and it is not as if I am using it beside Sola or Emeka, I just wanted to create a unism in my name, I didn't want people to say he is Yoruba or Ibo.With a Desmond Elliot, you don't know where he is from.

Having come from a polygamous background, how has that experience been able to help you in the making of your own home?

Well, my father said something, he said after he got married to my step mother, he then decided to marry my mother in order to run away from the troubles of his first wife (my step mother) but eventually he realised that he was creating more 'wahala' for himself. Now he has to shuttle between two homes, it is not easy on him and there is nothing like living a single life with your family, this we are able to learn from him.

In view of the rate of divorces in the movie industry, are you in anyway threatened by the circumstances surrounding your job such that you want to make your own marriage work?

Well, as a Nigerian, you have a culture which does not encourage divorce. Some times people get married for different reasons. I am glad my marriage is still on and I pray it continues till death do us part. But that doesn't mean that anybody who had a failed marriage didn't plan for it to work, it's just that the reason under which it broke was different. I will never criticise anybody that has a failed marriage. Besides, that is not to say that in the entertainment industry that we are in, marriages are very funny, especially in the Hollwood, Bollywood, Nollywood kind of system where marriages and divorces are like changing clothes. But then, culture keeps us standing and the foundation under which such marriages are built also matters.

Tell us a little about your wife and kids.

My wife is Victoria, she is from Akwa Ibom state. She works in a bank, Union Homes and we are just recently blessed with two boys, a set of twins. We glorify God for this. Their names are Denzel and Desmond.

Marvelous! How old are the children?

Two weeks .

I recall that in 2005, you were wishing for a triplet or a twin.

(laughs) Well, what can I say, God answers prayers. They are miracle children. It's mind blowing. Every day I think about it, I just think about God's mercy. His infinite mercy. In fact, it is mind blowing. And to imagine the way God did it, one looks so much like my wife. He takes to my lips. That is what I really like the most.

Taking a cue from what you just said, how do you cope with your female fans?

We thank God for their lives. It is probably because of them that we are working right now. We appreciate them and thank them for buying our movies.

Years back, I recall that you were hijacked by some girls in Port Harcourt, do you still have such experience?

No, I don't. Now they know I am married, so they leave me alone. (laughs)

How do you manage your popularity or stardom as the case may be?

I don't know about stardom really because stardom is relative. I keep telling them, to call somebody a star, you must have all the star qualities, you have to have all the riches, you must have all the money, you must be able to fly everywhere and every time you want to fly, you can decide to work on any project and will achieve it. So, stardom is relative. But managing the little popularity that God has given to me is to make sure that I do it to the point that people get to like what I am doing and love me even when I decide to do other endeavours like the farming I said I was going to do and my foundation.Like I said, the NGO, is where I want to see people come and support. I want to put boreholes in many local government areas and just make people happy. You can't believe that in many areas in the country, especially in the North, people don't have water. Where the bathe is where they drink from, where the animals go to drink is where they drink from, and it is so sad.

You have a Jos background, how come we don't get to see you in most of Izu Ojukwu's movies?

May be at the right time, you will get to see me in his movies. But I think Izu will be in a better position to answer that, Izu has always had a problem with my physique. He's always like the macho kind of looks. I called him up about two weeks ago, I said bros, I have started working on my physique seriously. So let those scripts start flowing in. So, hopefully, we will do something together this year.

Acting the love or romance roles most of the time, don't you get bored?

It depends. If the love roles have a different twist to it, I'm fine. But if the love roles have the same monotonous thing, the type where father don't seems to agree to the marriage or your mother, I am tired of those kind of scripts. If it's going to be love, let it be love from a different angle.

Any regrets?

None, whatsoever, God has blessed me. Desmond Sola Emeka Elliot is blessed. Sometimes I feel sad, sometimes upset, sometimes I am in a good mood, by and large, I am blessed and I pray that God will let people experience the kind of blessings that I have experienced in this life. And you know what, there are still many more to come. God says just believe in me and he is going to still surprise me in blessing.

Your happiest moments?

Holding my children, twin boys in my arms is the greatest thing that has happened to me.

What is your idea of fashion?

I like wearing good clothes. I love jag, I just like clean clothes, tight fitted clothes, mostly British clothes.

There was a time you had your hair plated, not in the movies. Do you think that this cannot affect your Christian life?

It depends on the particular time and why you are doing it. You know, all those things are peripheral, they are minor compared to the fact that you have to work day in-day out with Jesus. Or have a clean relationship with God. And I did that because I was in the movies. That's why I kept my hair.
