DRUG ACTRESS, WUNMI APOLOGISES TO ALLAH, MUSLIMS
Convicted drug actress, Hassanat Taiwo Akinwande a.k.a. Wunmi, has publicly apologised to Muslims and Allah for getting herself enmeshed in a drug scandal. In an apology letter written to NASFAT, a Muslim group, the traumatised actress pleaded with other Muslim brothers and sisters to forgive her for getting involved in drug trafficking and also pray with her as she seeks Allah's forgiveness. Reading her letter last Sunday to hundreds of Muslim faithful, Alhaji Gbade Abdullahi Akinbode, NASFAT's National Chief Missioner, said the actresses regrets her involvement in such an act. She also thanked the entire members of NASFAT and the mission's board for their prayers for her during her travails.
“I, Hasanat Taiwo Akinwande give thanks to every member of NASFAT for your prayers for me and I also seek your forgiveness because I have offended you all. I beg you all to join me as I seek Allah's forgiveness for my sins,” the letter read in part. Her presence at the gathering almost disrupted the reading of her letter but for the intervention of the security committee as some Muslims were strongly opposed her being there. She was eventually whisked off to the sick bay for safety. Wunmi was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Saturday, 23 September, 2006 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja. She was about to board a Virgin Atlantic plane to London when she was arrested. She was later arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lagos in November on charges of trafficking an illegal drug.
Wunmi pleaded not guilty to the charges on her first arraignment but on 16 January, the actress changed her plea to guilty when she was brought to court for the continuation her trail. On 25 January this year, a Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced her to three years imprisonment with the option to pay N3 million fine. The actress opted to pay the fine and she regained her freedom on 5 February.
