"Foreign Labels Don't Really Care About Your Personal Stuff" – Tiwa Savage Advises Artistes To Be Wary Of Signing For Record labels
Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has shared her perspective on record labels, shedding light on her time at MAVIN record as a reference.
Speaking in a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, the mother of one maintained that during her time at Don Jazzy's MAVIN records— she was crowded by support from him and also her colleagues in the record label.
According to her, during controversy or personal issues, she had the MAVIN team to cry onto, and a solution was always provided.
She compared it to her new foreign record label, stating that they have no time for artistes' personal issues.
She said:
"Who you signed to is very important and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin. Whenever there’s a controversy online I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts and we would talk about it. I would cry if I had to cry and we would get through it.
“But being with a [foreign] label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part it.”
Tiwa Savage was formerly signed to MAVIN records in 2012, before her departure to Universal Music Group in 2019.
Despite her exit from her former label, she still holds close ties and relationships.
