"Collaboration Is Not Supposed To Be Competition" – Joeboy Admonishes Colleagues

By Oluwarantimi Oludase

Nigerian singer Joseph Akinwale, popularly known as Joeboy, has expressed his view on the mindset of his colleagues in the music industry, especially when it involves collaboration.

Speaking in a recent interview with Cool FM Lagos alongside his colleague, Wizkid Chan, Joeboy stated that he prefers collaborating with artistes he has a relationship with, as this would prevent any form of ego or competition.

According to him, collaboration doesn't equate to competition, adding that his decision to feature anyone is focused on merely doing his thing, while the other person does the same

"It is easier for me to collaborate with artists that I am cool with or friends with. Because there will be no ego or inner competition. Personally, if I feature you, I expect you to outshine me in the song. That is why I featured you. So, I don’t get the competition."

Adding his perspective, Wizard Chan emphasized that "ego" is his main issue with collaboration. He stressed that some artistes will request for a feature, and will try to dictate everything about the song.

He maintained that his reason for agreeing to a collaboration is to bring a different idea to the song, emphasizing that "it is not a competition."

He said:
"My problem with collaboration is just ego. I would never interfere when you’re recording; you just also do the same. Some artists will ask for a feature and want to tell you how to do your job. That is wrong. Let me do my thing.

“The reason I would feature anybody is because I cannot do what they are doing. And I can not even tell them to sound like me or do my style. The aim of collaboration is to bring a different aspect to the song. And it is not a competition. But some artists would go as far as changing their verses when they hear their collaborator’s own and it sounds better than their’s. It is not supposed to be a competition."
