"We Were In Abject Poverty Despite Fela's Fame" - Femi Kuti Reveals
Veteran Nigerian musician, Femi Kuti, has revealed that his late father and Afrobeats pioneer, Fela Kuti, was poor, and could not feed his family at some point.
The Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician shared that when Fela's first hit song 'Jeun Ko Ku’ was gaining traction, his family were in abject poverty, and couldn't fend for their food.
Femi made this claim during a recent interview with Afropolitan. He said:
“Fela was very poor. He couldn’t even afford food for us his kids. I mean, really really poor. Then we were living at No. 14A Agege Motor Road, this was all before Kalakuta.
“Every music store was playing Fela’s first Afrobeats hit ‘Jeun Ko Ku.’ I think he too was surprised at the reception he got.”
