By Oluwarantimi Oludase

Nigerian afro pop singer, Ugochi Lydia Onuoha, best known as Guchi has recounted her time before singing professionally.

The ‘Jennifer’ crooner disclosed that she was tasked with fending for her family before she released her first song.

Speaking with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, Guchi stated that it was her boss at the ice cream shop she used to work in who changed her life.

She disclosed that she was putting in efforts with her singing talent as she made sure she sang even at work to the extent that her colleagues at her ice cream shop recognised her as a singer.

She stated that that was what singled her out on one of the days she was singing and her boss at her ice cream shop inquired of who the singer was, and her colleagues revealed that she was the one, that was her game changer.

She said during the interview;
“I used to work in an ice cream store. I didn’t

want to sit down and say I have a passion for music and wait for Don Jazzy to come and sign me in my house. I had to feed my siblings and my mother,” she explained.

“This particular day, I was at the back, singing and preparing the ice cream so I could pour it inside the machine then my boss walked in and asked who was singing, and they all screamed Guchi.

“So he said, I like your boldness and then put his hand in his pocket. I thought he was about to give me a tip I would use to go home that day but he brought out a card. I felt so disappointed. I didn’t know that was my destiny helper.”
