Following series of complaints of police harassment by top Nigerian artistes, the Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has said that nobody is above the law.

Speaking recently at the Ground House Reception (GHR) held in his honour at The Coliseum Niteshift, Opebi, Lagos, Okiro said the problem of an average Nigerian is arrogance and instead of obeying the police, they will resort to name dropping.

He said that an average policeman is trained to respect an average Nigerian citizen but “our stars seem to disregard the law of the land when they meet police at check points.”

The Inspector-General of Police said the harassment will continue until the Nigerian artistes learn to obey the law and stop insulting the police, adding, “police are to protect and serve you but don't resort to blackmail and name dropping.”

Speaking on police character in Nigerian films, the former Lagos State Police Commissioner said “film producers don't portray us well. It is either they use a character who has little or nothing to do with the police or an amateur actor.”

Sir Okiro, who had earlier led the representatives of the movie producers to a meeting said: “I will like to meet with your representatives again.”

While promising to assist them in their productions, the IG said whenever artistes have a police character in their films, “I will be obliged to send a policeman who can act the role or send a police officer to train the actor.”
