Popular human rights activist and Lagos-based lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has rejected his appointment as member of the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on the abducted Chibok school girls in Borno State. The legal luminary, on Sunday, stated that even though he appreciates the honour from the government, he would not wish to take up the offer.

Falana said he rejected the appointment because the committee of concerned Nigerians and parents of the kidnapped girls had already engaged his services as their lawyer in the matter pending before the court.

Last Friday, a committee was established in an effort to rescue the over 200 girls of the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State kidnapped by Boko Haram. A retired Army General, Ibrahim A. Sabo was appointed as the Chairman the panel, while the Permanent Secretary (Special Services Office) OSGF was made the Secretary.

Others in the committee are Hajia Hawa Ibrahim, Hajia Fatima Kwaku, two representatives of National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), two representatives of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (one whom shall be a female), two representatives of the National Parents Teachers Association, two representatives of the Nigeria Police, two representatives of the State Security Service and two representatives of the Nigerian Army.

They were charged to

Liaise with the Borno State Government and establish the circumstances leading to the school remaining open for boarding students when other schools were closed

Liaise with relevant authorities and the parents of the missing girls to establish the actual number and identities of the girls abducted

Interface with the Security Services and Borno State Government to ascertain how many of the missing girls have returned

Mobilise the surrounding communities and the general public on citizen support for a rescue strategy and operation

Articulate a framework for a multi-stakeholder action for the rescue of the missing girls and

Advise the government on any matter incidental to the terms of reference.
