Northern star actress, Maryam Booth has responded to the rumour in town that most Hausa actors are illiterates. The Bayero University, Kano Mass Communications Diploma holder, Maryam said those people are relegating the Kannywood actors lack wisdom.

According to her, “most of the time, the problem comes from those who think all Kannywood actors are illiterates. Some of them post a lot of nonsense on my Facebook wall, others tweet things that aren't correct about Kannywood. I just ignore such people. It is my fans that turn such silly postings into a debate by trying to defend us that we have educated actors and actresses in the Hausa movie industry.

Some of us, if not all are all educated and we are outspoken too. I think it's our culture that has labeled us, the society shouldn't view us in that light. To an extent though, I don't blame those who say this because some of the actresses in Kannywood have refused to get an education.

They don't think it is important to get an education because they already have a career. Most of them think they are too old to return to school. But they are still young and they can give education a second trial.''
