QUESTION MARK, ASA AT WAR

The entertainment industry is always buzzing, and crisis seems to have become an organic feature of the sector.

Some of the record labels have in recent times been at war with the musicians they signed on.

First, it was Kennis Music versus Eddy Montana. Then Question Mark and Street Monks caught the bug, with the former banning the latter for what they called anti-company activities. Street Monks has since fired back at the recording company.

Now, it is Asa who is squaring up with Question Mark.

Asa has just signed a multi-million naira deal with a French label called Naïve, but this does not seem to go down well with Question Mark which insists there is a contract binding the singer to it.

Speaking on behalf of Question Mark, the CEO of the company, Victor Dejo-Richards, said the company signed a deal with Asa in the UK.

“That is why her first album is in the studios but has not been released. It is our property,” Dejo-Richards added.

Concerning Asa's new deal, Dejo-Richards said, “We are just keeping our fingers crossed and watching her. Definitely, our lawyers in the UK will have to deal with that. She feels she can just take us for granted. How can she expect to have her cake and eat it?”

The Question Mark boss said his company had already spent a whopping N14 million on Asa. “We have spent well over 14 million naira on her. This includes the car we bought for her, her travelling expenses and we even got her a place to stay. I must confess that we have not made a penny from her after spending so much.”

Dejo-Richards also accused Asa of not wanting anybody to benefit from working with her. “That is not right. As much as we signed a deal with her, we ought to recoup our money. We invested in her and we have not made a kobo from her after spending so much,” he said.

In her response, Asa, who spoke through her manager, Janet, said, “When a dog is defeated, he uses his tail to cover his face.”

Asa says she has not been working with Question Mark for close to two years, and she has no reason not to move on with her life.

“It is sad that Question Mark is always having problems with their partners and their musicians. They should ask themselves why they are always in one mess or the other. The entertainment industry was there before they came into it, but since they came, there has been trouble in the industry.”

Concerning the N14million the record label claimed it had spent on Asa, the musician said, “That is a big lie. I learnt they said they bought me a jeep and they gave me a house. I wonder when they would stop lying.”

According to Asa, legally, she has the right to move to another label and she did so in the right manner.

She said, “It was just a production deal that we had with them. They were not our record label. We had to move on with our lives since they refused to do things the right way. They keep saying so many things, but they don't have a proof of anything. They already have a lot of problems in their hands. I would advise they deal with those and leave us alone.”
