We Were Acting To Survive – Toyin Abraham Recounts Early Days Of Career

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has opened up on her journey in the movie industry, revealing that acting began profitable several years after she has been in the industry.

In a recent video, the box office queen admitted that despite beginning her journey in the movie industry in 2001, it was not until 8 years later before the venture started yielding profits.

Reminiscing on her early career days, Abraham said that many of the actors were receiving meagre amounts, noting how they only remained in the profession to survive.

She said: “I just started making money 8 years ago, and I’ve been in the film industry since 2001. Back then, we acted and got peanuts, but we did it just to survive."

Toyin Abraham is not the first actress to make this claim, as several veteran stars including Hafiz Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka, Dele Odule, amongst other actors and actresses have revealed that acting was not a bill-paying profession initially, until the advent of proper structure and social media years later.
