Basketmouth Laments Nigerian Bloggers' Obsession With Scandal, Says Society That Amplifies Failure Makes Greatness Seem Irrelevant
Nigerian comedian and actor Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has voiced his concern over how Nigerian blogs focus on amplifying scandals over success.
In a recent Instagram post, Basketmouth observed that many bloggers have turned negativity into premium content, noting that while one scandal can trend for days, genuine excellence barely gets a headline.
He questioned when celebrating mediocrity became part of the culture, and when brilliance last trended the way controversy often does.
Admonishing media platforms across the country, Basketmouth urged them to normalise celebrating achievements, discipline, creativity, consistency, and hard work — rather than focusing solely on gossip, outrage, and downfalls.
He wrote: "Some Nigerian bloggers have mastered the art of turning negativity into premium content. One scandal trends for days, but genuine excellence barely gets a headline.
Somebody builds something remarkable, breaks barriers, creates jobs, sells out shows, changes lives…we get silence. But let there be one embarrassing moment and suddenly every platform becomes CNN.
At some point, we have to ask ourselves: when did celebrating mediocrity become our culture? When was the last time brilliance trended the way controversy does? When did we stop applauding people for winning?
A society that only amplifies failure slowly teaches people that greatness is irrelevant. And that’s dangerous.
We need to normalize celebrating achievements, discipline, creativity, consistency and hard work again. Not just gossips, outrage and downfalls.
A society obsessed with negativity and downfall will eventually ignore greatness and excellence."
Basketmouth's post come amid the amplification of the scandal involving media personality Frank Edoho, his ex-wife Sandra Edoho and her romantic affair with singer Chike.
