Omah Lay Opens Up On Afrobeats Struggle; Claims Genre Is Peculiar To Lagos
Nigerian singer Stanley Omah Didia, popularly known as Omah Lay, has opened up on his initial struggle as a singer of the Afrobeats genre.
The 'Reason' crooner made the disclosure during the listening party of his forthcoming album, ‘Clarity Of Mind.' He asserted that the Afrobeats genre originated from Lagos, with the pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti being a Yoruba man, hence the genre is peculiar to the South West.
Omah Lay revealed that his background as an artist from Port Harcourt proved an hindrance, until he ignored validation, and decided to stay true to his fans and family without caring about perception of others about him.
He said: "Afrobeats is mainly Lagos. It is mainly Yorubas. Fela Kuti is the pioneer, we all know that and he is Yoruba. I am from Port Harcourt and you have to break into Lagos. There are only two people from PH that you know; Burna Boy and me.
“It got to a point I am like, you know what? I am going to take my time and look at my family and fans; people who really love me, I am going to stay there. The rest of you, the rest of the world, don’t love me. Fuck off. That is it."
