Everyone Mustn't Do Litigation Or Entertainment Law - Stan Alieke Advises Newly Inducted Lawyers

Popular Nigerian lawyer, Stan Alieke, has dropped an important advice for the newly Inducted lawyers. Recall that many graduates of the Nigerian law school were called to the bar yesterday.

Reacting to the good news, the Abuja-based lawyer, via his Instagram page, revealed that many young lawyers either write to him or come to his office to request for his guidance and mentorship, stating that they feel very comfortable around him because he is also a young lawyer who is excelling.

According to him, the secret to his success in the law profession or any other endeavor is strategic hard work and being consistent at it.

Advising the new lawyers, he emphasized that they should carve out a niche for themselves in taxation law, artificial intelligence law, and block chain/financial technology, stating that not everyone should do litigation or entertainment law, urging them to dedicate themselves to it and within five years, they will be a household name in the law industry.

He wrote: "Young lawyers do write me or come to my office every now and then requesting for my mentorship, I think they always feel more comfortable around me because we share a thing in common which is I am a young lawyer as well and I have been marvelously helped by God, blessed with good clients & great staff which has enabled me build a formidable law firm at a young age.

What is my secret?, The only secret I know of to succeeding as a young lawyer or succeeding in any field of endeavor is “strategic” hard work and being consistent at it. I know all these sound like clichés, maybe they do, but it worked for me or maybe I am just lucky as some colleagues who know me from afar do say (that’s a story for another day).

For starters, taxation lawyers going forward will be in high demand and will therefore be a lucrative area of practice in Nigeria, as a young lawyer, start carving a niche for yourself in that area. Artificial intelligence law (AI) is gaining momentum in the global space, why not consider it as well as a young lawyer, Blockchain/ financial technology lawyers are in high demand, think of it, etc. Get yourself locked in, I give you just five years and you will “blow”. Everyone mustn’t do litigation, everyone mustn’t do entertainment law.

(I’m often mistaken by young lawyers that I’m an entertainment lawyer maybe because I represent a whole lot of entertainers)….

“A good product sells itself”?, Does it really?, That phrase, I can tell you my friends is not true. No matter how good a product is, if nobody knows of it nobody will patronize it, therefore, look for classy ways to project and market yourself as a young lawyer. I often joke around with my staff and friends that I am the chief marketing Officer (CMO) of Law Capitol and God knows I’m living up to that; you need to see me in action “landing” a client (that’s a lecture for another day)… (contd in comment section.

Ofcourse I am not oblivion of the RPC that restricts lawyers from marketing/ambulance chasing, that’s the why I used the word, “classy”, you can market and sale your craft as a lawyer without breaching the RPC, the big law firms have mastered these art, pay attention to their activities and you will learn the best ways to do that.

Well, enough said, Congratulations to you my newest learned colleagues. I definitely can’t give one-on-one attention to the hundreds of young lawyers that constantly write me for mentorship or request to work in Law Capitol but you can read an article I wrote for Tekedia Institute in 2023 which I titled Becoming a 21st Century Lawyer, You’d sure find it useful and relevant."
