‎You Can Rename A Place, Not A Legacy - Charly Boy On Renaming Of 'Charly Boy Bus Stop' To 'Baddo Bus Stop'

Veteran Nigerian singer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has reacted to the decision of the Bariga Local Council Development Area to rename 'Charly Boy Bus Stop' to 'Baddo Bus Stop'.

‎ ‎Recall that the decision to rename the maverick singer's bus stop was made public on Friday by Kolade David, the Chairman of Bariga LCDA, who also announced that other Nigerian stars including 9ice, Tony Tetuila, Bukayo Saka, and King Sunny Ade were also honoured with street names.

‎ ‎Following the announcement, many netizens and fans of Charly Boy, have taken to social media to air their grievances at the action, citing political games as one of the leading factors into the renaming of the long-standing bus stop.

‎ ‎Reacting to the decision himself via his X handle, Charly Boy, who has been a vocal critic of President Tinubu's administration, summarized the decision to rename his bus stop as a political move.

‎ ‎He emphasized that it is very easy to rename a place, but practically impossible to rename a legacy, stressing that renaming the bus stop cannot hinder him from lending his voice for public freedom.

‎ ‎A part of Charly Boy's statement read: ‎“Dem say dey don change the name of Charly Boy Bus Stop. Hmmm. Very interesting. But let me remind you of something simple.

‎ ‎“You can rename a place… but you can’t rename a legacy. You can replace the signboard… but you can’t erase the spirit. And you definitely can’t silence a voice that shook your tables for decades!”
