I Didn't Realize We Needed Afrobeats Tag As An Umbrella To Go Anywhere - Burna Boy Apologizes For Saying 'Afrobeats Lacks Substance'

‎Afrobeats star, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has apologized for his previous statement that 'Afrobeats lacks substance.'

‎ ‎The 'City Boy' crooner had previously caused an uproar on social media in 2023, following his claim that 'Afrobeats has no substance', and adding that he was not an Afrobeats singer.

‎ ‎Speaking in a recent interview with BBC’s Eddie Kadi, the music star explained that he didn't understand why people wanted his music to be inside one box, stating that he felt putting every class of music as Afrobeats wasn't just cool with him then.

‎ ‎He added that he later realised that African artistes needed the Afrobeats tag as an umbrella to go to anywhere, while apologizing for his previous statement.

‎ ‎He said: ‎"I didn’t understand why people wanted my music to be inside one box. The way I saw it, if you just put everything into Afrobeats, you’re now comparing Socrates to Kendrick Lamar because they both said two things that rhyme so they both must be rappers…

‎ ‎“I didn’t realise we needed Afrobeats tag as an umbrella to go to anywhere. I totally get it now and I apologise for that confusion.”
